The People's Gallery – Toi ka Rere: Tūrangawaewae - Bethlehem College Seniors Art Exhibition.
Tūrangawaewae - literally tūranga (standing place), waewae (feet), it is often translated as ‘a place to stand’. Tūrangawaewae are places where we feel especially empowered and connected.
Year 11, 12 and 13 art students have explored the theme of identity through understanding their tūrangawaewae. Woven through the exhibition are the students' visits to our school marae, Te Wairoa, their journey to Tauranga city, Mount Maunganui beach, their homes, memories with whānau and friends, and their Christian faith.
The Incubator Gallery: Drift an Exhibition by Damien Kurth
On the other end of the scale Damien holds a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts from Otago Polytechnic.
Working mostly in oils, Kurth creates incredibly detailed 'trompe l'oeil' works that feel like tricks of the eye. The commonplace objects he paints possess the ‘seemliness of the unfamiliar’ or ‘Jamais vu’ a term used to describe the experience of being unfamiliar with something that is very familiar. He builds the painting’s surface slowly; each stroke of oil working with the other to create a harmonic whole.
The Pot House Gallery: Coming Undone - by Jo Harris
Jo Harris is an Auckland-based ceramic artist whose practice revolves around the theme of the authenticity of self and the masks we wear. This exhibition delves into the complex and often conflicting relationship between the inner psychological worlds of women and the roles that society continues to impose upon them. Using black clay as a primary medium, the work gives physical form to emotional and psychological states that are often difficult to articulate.
