Journeys - Through the NZ Landscape an Exhibition by Nik Williams

This exhibition reflects my personal journey exploring the beauty and diversity of the New Zealand landscape. Each artwork captures places I have visited, inspired by my photographs that help shape composition and perspective. My textured acrylic paintings draw influence from the Impressionist painters’ focus on light and atmosphere, and the bold, colourful style of David Hockney.
I use a range of materials, including plastic cards and palette knives, to create layered surfaces that convey depth and movement. I’m particularly drawn to painting on bright, sunny days when the strong contrasts of light and shadow bring the landscape to life. These contrasts not only highlight form and colour but also evoke the emotional energy I feel when immersed in nature.
Creating my own artwork allows me to reflect, connect emotionally with the environment, and find balance in my own wellbeing. As a practising artist and teacher, this process feeds directly back into my classroom practice. It reminds me of the importance of creativity as a tool for expression and emotional growth. Maintaining my art practice keeps my teaching fresh, authentic, and empathetic, inspiring students to find their own voice through art.
