Presented by The Incubator Creative Hub, join us at the Village Community Cinema for our 2024 season of Picture This - The Inspiration Behind The Creation.
In this series, artists share with us, the film that has inspired or resonated with their artistic practice, analytically reflecting on their work in correlation with their chosen film.
The Piano by Jane Campion is a profound exploration of identity, power and desire conveyed through a uniquely female lens. The film's central character, Ada, communicates through her art rather than her voice - her piano as both an instrument and a symbol represents her innermost self - her desires, frustrations, and resilience. Set against the untamed landscape of 19th-century Aotearoa New Zealand, The Piano contrasts nature's wild beauty with the oppressive structures of colonial society.
Local artist Lynette Fisher invites you to join her for a screening of this remarkable film and have a chat about what goes on in her studio before a painting is even started. Lynette will share some insights into how storytelling, nostalgia and identity are powerful drivers to her practice. Please join us for an evening of dark, moody and intensely beautiful imagery coupled with some good yarns!
