Christchurch Condolences It is hard to comprehend the devastating tragedy in Christchurch on Friday. New Zealand is grieving – for the people our country has lost, for the people still fighting for their lives, and their loved ones who are suffering unimaginable grief. As our Prime Minister has so eloquently put it, this is not New Zealand. It is not who we are.

Tauranga City Council is proud to be an organisation that embraces diversity. Our individual differences, no matter what they are, give vibrancy and colour to the place we live and work.

We will all be affected by this tragedy in different ways. For anyone needing support, please remember you can call or text 1737 – free, anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – and talk with a trained counsellor.

The Ministry of Health has resources that provide advice for those experiencing mental distress, including how to help and support children, and dealing with grief. The Ministry is working to translate these documents into a range of languages, and will be updating their website as and when these translations are completed.

Tauranga City Council is collating condolence books with messages of support to the Christchurch community. The books are made up of loose-leaf pages that council will bind. The books will be sent to Lianne Dalziel, Mayor of Christchurch, from our council and community. If you would like to share a message of support, please visit one of the following locations over the next week:

  • The Historic Village on 17th Avenue
  • All Tauranga libraries (including our mobile library)
  • Tauranga City Council’s Willow Street customer service centre
